Aziz Sancar was born in Savur, Mardin on the 8th of September, 1946. He was the seventh
of eight children of an ordinary family. He grew up in Savur and stayed there until 1963. He
started his educational life in a school in his hometown. In 1963, he graduated from Mardin
High School and then he moved to İstanbul alone to study medicine at Istanbul University.
He finished the university in 1969 and turned back to his hometown to work at a hospital.
He had great passion to study in the area of Molecular Biology and wanted to do research
on DNA repair. He won the scholarship of TÜBİTAK and went to the USA in 1971.
He studied at the University of Texas and Yale University. In 1997, he went to the
University of North Carolina. 2015 was an unforgettable year for him because he
took the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his study on DNA repair. He is currently in
the USA and goes on his studies at the University of North Carolina. He is a great
scientist and Turkish people are proud of him.
